If you are looking for a simple finale to an outdoor meal, why not put apple wedges on the grill, and treat everyone to a unique, grilled dessert?
Be sure to have the recipe on hand, because your guests will no doubt want to try grilled apples too!
Ingredients
1 sheet (9" x 9") of frozen puff pastry, thawed
FOR THE SAUCE
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup whipping cream
1/4 cup butter
FOR THE APPLES
4 Granny Smith apples or another type
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup whipped cream
Directions
Core, peel (if desired), and slice apples into wedges.
Using a cookie cutter, or a knife, cut the thawed puff pastry into 4" rounds.
To help prevent the pastry from "buckling" in the oven, pierce each round several times with a fork.
Bake the pastry rounds as per the package instructions, until they are baked, and golden brown in colour.
In a small sauce-pan, over medium-low heat, combine the brown sugar, whipping cream and butter, and stir constantly until the ingredients are well mixed, and the sugar has fully dissolved.
Remove caramel sauce mixture from heat and set aside.
In a large bowl toss the melted butter and the apple slice to coat.
Prepare the grill for medium heat.
Preheat a perforated grill pan over direct medium heat for about 10 minutes.
Add the slices of apple to the grill pan, and grill (with the lid closed most of the time), until apples are browned and tender, about 4 minutes. Turn apples over, and grill for about another 4 minutes.
Transfer apples slices to a bowl.
If sauce has cooled too much, reheat it over low heat, and then spoon some of the sauce over the grilled apple slices, gently tossing to coat.
To Serve: Place a pastry round on each dessert plate, arrange the grilled apples on top, and spoon the remaining caramel sauce over the apple slices.
Add a dollop of whipped cream.
Be creative, you can grill many different types of fruit and use them instead of the apples to make a grilled fruit dessert using puff pastry and sauce. Try pears too!
