I used store-purchased pastry dough and fresh MacIntosh variety of apples, but almost ANY kind of apple will work great for this pie.
If you prefer this pie can be made with homemade or store-purchased apple pie filling instead of fresh apples!
Ingredients
FOR THE FILLING
1 - 9" unbaked pastry pie crust, store-purchased or homemade
1/2 granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
4 tbsp. all-purpose flour
5 cups cored, peeled and sliced apples
1/2 cup raisins, optional
FOR THE TOPPING
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/3 cup butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
1/4 cup rolled oats, optional
Directions
Line a 9" pie dish with the unbaked pie crust.
In a bowl, combine the filling ingredients - the sugar, cinnamon, flour and (optional) raisins.
Add the prepared apple slices to the bowl, and toss to coat the apple slices.
Transfer the apples to the pie crust shell.
In another bowl, combine the topping ingredients - the flour, sugar, cinnamon.
Add the pieces of butter and mix with a fork (or your fingers!), until the mixture is crumbly.
Add the chopped nuts and / or the oats if desired.
Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples in the pie shell.
Bake at 425° F for 10 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 350° F, and bake for approximately 45 - 50 minutes, or until the applesa are tender and the fruit juices are bubbling up.
I added my pie crust shield protector to the pie after it had baked for about 30 minutes, to prevent the edges from becoming too dark or burning...If you don't have one of these you can also make one,
